Play Me a Picture, Paint Me a Tune!
The Annual Music-to-Art
Collaboration between
Evanston Symphony Orchestra
and Evanston Middle Schools
One of our most innovative projects is the award-winning, Play Me a Picture, Paint Me a Tune! Middle schools, local organizations, and after-school enrichment programs have welcomed this music-to-art collaboration since its inception in 1996.
The project’s goals are to:
- Introduce classical music and its performance to youngsters in an accessible “hands-on” way not usually available in a classroom.
- Reward students with an opportunity to exhibit their work in the community and be recognized for their creative efforts
- Challenge students to broaden their definition of the ‘arts’ and its relationship to the creative experience.
The Process
ESO provides the music from one of the compositions that we will perform to area art teachers. The instructors play the piece for their students and lead them to create artwork inspired by the music and describe their experience and perspective in a short artist’s statement. A selection of the most expressive artwork is displayed at the Evanston Public Library and Blick Art Materials in downtown Evanston and then in the lobby of Pick-Staiger Concert Hall on the afternoon of the concert performance.
The Participants:
- Bessie Rhodes Magnet School
- Chute Middle School
- Evanston Home Educators
- Haven Middle School
- King Lab School
- Nichols Middle School
- McGaw YMCA Club Mid
- St. Athanasius School
